The women’s tennis team defeated Wake Forest 5-2 in Sunday’s match, bringing each team’s ACC record to 4-5.
The Wolfpack started strong, winning the doubles point with Catherine Grotz and Lenka Hojckova defeating the Deacons’ Sasha Kulikova and Emilee Malvehy 8-2 and Berkeley Brock and Daria Petrovic defeating Wake’s Aileen Davis and Christian Tara 8-3.
Brock said the Wolfpack pushed hard on offense in the doubles matches.
“I think we really out-competed [Wake Forest] in doubles,” Brock said, “We’re really moving them, and they were trying to fight back rather than initiate things like we were.”
Brock went on to win her singles match against the Deacons’ Christian Tara in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, but admitted that she became a little overconfident.
“There was a point where I thought, ‘Yeah, I got this,'” Brock said. “But then I lost the next two games. It just made me step up and work harder for it.”
In singles play, State only lost two matches, with Wake Forest’s Kulikova defeating Petrovic and Davis defeating Grotz.
Petrovic was disappointed with her performance, but complimented Kulikova.
“In singles, it was just a bad day [for me],” Petrovic said. “[My opponent] played well.”
Unfortunately for the Deacons, they could not field enough players due to injuries to flesh out all of the matches played and had to forfeit a singles match. NCSU won the two other singles matches besides the bye and Brock’s win, with Hojckova and Julia Roach each beating their opponents.
