The annual College of Design Halloween Bash, themed “Party inside the Human Body,” will not have alcohol this year, but according to Marie Fornaro, president of the Design Council, it is not as much of a controversy this year.
The bash will be held Saturday from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the Design Courtyard and the Pitt, located between Brooks and Kamphoefner Halls.
“Last year was the first year without alcohol, which really turned students off, but this year, we actually have had a lot of student support, and I think they’ve gotten used to the idea that we don’t have alcohol anymore,” Fornaro, a senior in art and design, said. “We can still have a good time since that’s not what the bash was about.”
Emily Millette, a senior in graphic design, said she was understanding of the University’s decision and said it hasn’t affected her decision to go.
“There’s been a lot of concern with drinking on campus and driving off campus, which is a big thing for me,” Millette said. “For me, the bash is about seeing my friends and their costumes, and having a good time, it doesn’t have to involve alcohol.”
Although alcohol is no longer being served at the event, Fornaro claims security measures are going to be extremely tight this year.
“Campus Police are very concerned with alcohol being there,” Fornaro said.
According to Fornaro, the original starting time for the event was also changed from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. to allow Campus Police time to get to the Halloween Bash after the Homecoming football game.
Despite firm security measures, Fornaro believes the time change is better for the event anyway and still expects anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 people to come.
Heather Hardison, a junior in art and design, said she’s going regardless, because “it’s friends, tradition and a good time.”
Fornaro said the event will be held in the two locations to accommodate more people and meet fire safety standards.
Last year, the Halloween Bash was only held in the Design Courtyard due to construction in the Pitt.
“Traditionally, the bash was exclusively held in the Pitt. We all just kind of decided it would be better to have it in both locations because we could fit more people in the event, and the courtyard would be good for overflow,” Fornaro said.
The Design Council voted on this year’s theme for the Halloween Bash after students submitted ideas at the beginning of the fall semester.
Along with voting for the theme, the Design Council has prepared for the event for over a month.
“We spent a lot of time in advance getting decorations ready for the Bash, so that everyone will be blown away,” Fornaro said.
Hardison said she is excited about seeing all of the decorations at the bash.
“There’s going to be lungs and an esophagus you travel through,” Hardison said. “It will be awesome.”
Along with the student-created decorations, “Party inside the Human Body” will include a DJ, performances by the bands Future Islands and Strange, and the annual costume contest.
“I’m mostly looking forward to the costume contest. I also want to see the bands that are playing, but the costume contest will be the pinnacle for me,” Millette said.
Some students and the Design Council alike said they have positive expectations for the bash and feel it’s going to be better than last year’s.
“It’s been a tradition for over 20 years so it’s been a part of the College of Design’s culture. … It gives all of the students [a chance to] get together to celebrate the holiday and use their creative skills to celebrate,” Fornaro said. “I can’t imagine the Design School without the Halloween Bash.”
All students are welcome to the College of Design Halloween Bash. Tickets will be sold in advance on Friday for $8 in the Pitt and $10 at the door.
