A sprinkler head burst in the trash shoot area of the sixth floor of Bowen Hall at around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening, causing about 300 gallons of water to leak from the building, according to Capt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police.
Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and the resident advisers evacuated all residents from the building.
“It caused some flooding, and they had to evacuate,” Barnwell said. “Facilities operations is working to clean it up.”
According to Barnwell, officials are worried about electrical issues because some of the wiring in the building got wet, so Facilities decided to examine the wiring, waiting a few hours before letting anyone back into the building.
According to Landon Brock, an RA on the eighth floor and sophomore in biological sciences, when the water main break first happened, residents didn’t know what it was.
“I was just looking at the grid, and the light was flashing for the sixth floor [water leak],” Brock said.
The residence director, Lis Ellis refused to comment, referring all questions to Director of Housing Susan Grant who could not be reached for comment Monday evening.
Barnwell said facilities does not anticipate the problem will have serious repercussions.
“It could be as simple as someone threw a big bag of trash in the shoot, and it hit the sprinkler,” he said.
The firefighters who arrived on the scene did not stay long, saying they arrived to help clean up, but it seemed like Facilities had the issue under control.
