Construction around DH Hill Library is ongoing as work on the library’s bricks continues.
“The original problem that was identified was that there was a failure of the support system for the brick veneer on that part of the building,” Jack Colby, associate vice chancellor for facilities operations, said. Colby said when the problem was identified, Facilities secured the area and “erected the barricades” to prevent anyone from injury.
“We then did an evaluation with a structural engineer …. The engineer then identified the failure of some support brackets for the brick panels,” Colby said.
But for some students like Chris Bowman, a junior in microbiology, these repairs since the semester’s beginning have been a nuisance.
“I live off campus, so usually, I try to park as close as possible to the library, which is usually Hillsborough Street,” Bowman said. “And even like [Monday night], you can see lines of people walking a mile to the library around the fences.”
Colby said the engineer made a recommendation on how to repair the library, which Facilities decided to fund and is now in the process of designing the repairs.
However, these repairs may not be going fast enough for some.
Bowman said he hasn’t seen any construction work on the library during the day other than on the stairs, but he never noticed problems initially.
“I never even used the stairs where they were constructing, so it was never a big deal to me,” he said.
Colby said the work is being detailed out to take place on the sides of the main building.
“As it looks right now, work will entail taking down existing masonry panels, replacing them with new brick and supports,” Colby said.
