The new N.C. State Soccer Stadium saw its highest-scoring game yet Wednesday as the men’s team won its match against Florida Atlantic 5-3. The victory moves the Wolfpack to 3-5-1 on the year.
“We needed to win,” coach George Tarantini said. “We’ve been scoring goals and that’s important. We still have injuries and issues but that is part of the game. This is the ACC. You have to be ready no matter who [you play] — any time, any where, any place.”
An active game on the offensive side of the ball saw the Wolfpack take 12 shots on goal and allowed five different players to score for the Pack. Junior forward Federico Nachmann scored the game’s first goal in the eighth minute and set the tone for the rest of the first half.
“We had a lot of opportunities to score early,” Nachmann, who also had an assist, said. “I had a good shot and scored for the team. We have to continue to create these opportunities and stay active on defense as well.”
Tarantini said there are both positives and negatives to having five different players score five different goals.
“[It’s] good because we give a lot of opportunities to people,” Tarantini said. “Bad because we need more understanding of where we are and where we are going. We can not continue to move people in and out.”
Junior forward Ronnie Bouemboue had a goal and an assist on the game, continuing his hot streak of scoring five goals in his past five games played.
“We really appreciate the fans, especially the devoted ones who are out here every afternoon to cheer for us,” Bouemboue said. “The fans motivate us to play well even when we are feeling a little tight.
FAU picked up steam the second half with nearly twice as many shots on goal. All of the Owls’ three goals came in the second half, with the Pack already up by five goals.
“We cannot get complacent when we get tired,” Bouemboue said. “We gave them too many opportunities in the second half. As long as we play a tough 90 minutes we can win games.”
With 15 underclassmen on the team’s roster, the younger players showed good progress scoring two of the team’s five goals, according to Tarantini.
“[Freshman midfielder] Watt Williams played a very good game today,” Tarantini said. “That is good for the future of our team. We have a lot of good young talent.”
