Campus Recreation, in addition to hosting its usual set of intramural and club sports, group fitness activities, outdoor trips, as well as many job opportunities, will be offering several new programs for the fall 2008 semester.
Laura Munsterteiger, assistant director of marketing for Campus Recreation, said she is very excited for this year.
“We had RecFest on Saturday and in the past we have had about 3,000 students, and this year, we had over 4,300 students,” Munsterteiger said. “With the health and fitness craze, everyone wants to be healthy and active, and this gives us the opportunity to program more.”
For the fall, Campus Recreation has installed three new programs and implemented some policy changes.
According to Jason Spivey, assistant director for intramural sports, the biggest change from last year is the online intramural system will stay open all year. This modification enables new players to be added to the roster at any time. Also, manager meetings will be very important for intramural teams.
“Manager meetings are mandatory this year,” Spivey said. “This means that at least one representative from every team has to attend every meeting in order to participate in intramurals.”
Spivey said he is excited about the new intramural programs Campus Recreation is offering this semester. Among these new programs is the flag football combine. The event will be similar to NFL combines but altered for flag football. It will be held on August 26 at 6 p.m. on the Lower Miller Fields, and registration will begin at 5:45 p.m.
“This is a big event that we are doing to get people excited for the flag football season. They can come out and test their skills in many activities such as the 40 yard dash, passing ability, and big obstacle courses,” Spivey said.
Flag Football registration is already underway. Sign-ups will be open online only until August 25.
This October, Campus Recreation will be hosting its first Carolina Golf Association (CGA) Golf Doubles official tournament. This tournament is open to any college student, and the winner will get an all expense paid trip to play in the national Las Vegas tournament.
“The CGA tournament will be held at River Ridge on Oct. 18. This tournament is a pretty big deal for us,” Spivey said. “It will run like a true tournament.”
Another new program for Intramural Sports is wiffleball, taking place later this fall. Registration begins Oct. 27th, and it will be organized in a round-robin seeding style.
As for club sports, bowling, golf and racquetball clubs are requesting affiliation this year. According to Mary Yemma, assistant director for club sports, many club teams had a lot of success scheduling events.
“Some clubs are going to have big seasons this year,” Yemma said. “Lacrosse has a lot of games scheduled, as well as Men’s Rugby.”
Spivey said what a student gets out of Campus Recreation is a matter of how much he or she wants out of it.
“There are all kinds of programs happening on a daily bases,” Spivey said. “There are lots of things to get involved in-it all depends on what you want to take your limits too.”
