Changes at Carmichael
Know your digitsEffective this semester, Carmichael Complex no longer requires IDs to gain entrance to its facilities, Dawn Sanner, director of Carmichael Complex facilties and operations, said.
The gymnasium and RecCenter allow students, faculty and other members who have photos in the RecPack system and can provide their ID numbers to gain admission to both facilities during regular operating hours, she said.
Sanner said she hopes this will help students who are running late for PE classes and do not have IDs with them as well as members who want to use the locker rooms in the gym and then work out at the RecCenter.
Students taking PE classes in the 2600 rooms will find these classrooms in the RecCenter.
Paying the priceMembers will still need to purchase guest passes at the main entrance of the RecCenter before bringing guests to Carmichael. Equipment pay-offs and family membership purchases can also be made at the same entrance, according to Sanner.
Equipment and locker rentals not turned in by May will cost member $15 for cleaning only and $20 for cleaning with equipment check-in.
Into the futureThe Rocky Branch stream behind the Intramural fields will be renovated beginning this semester to help prevent flooding and make the area more environmentally friendly, Sanner said.
Facilities also plans to renovate the area between the RecCenter and the Casey Aquatics Center, hopefully by adding more trees, benches, tables, an outdoor grill and installing wireless Internet, Sanner said.
“Talk about a nice space to meet for a bus,” she said. ___________________________________________
Remodeling hits Housing
Lighting up around campusWhile the Smoking Regulation for University Facilities, which only allows smoking in areas more than 25 feet away from buildings, took effect Jan. 1, the restrictions will not affect University Housing building areas until this summer, Susan Grant, director of University Housing, said.
“[The smoking restrictions] don’t impact the residence halls until July,” she said. “As much as possible, we try not to make policies in the middle of the year.
Flip this residence hallHousing will continue renovations to the area between Tucker and Owen residence halls to correct “massive erosion” in the sloping terrain, Grant said.
The makeover, which began Dec. 17, 2007 and will continue through February, includes filling eroded areas near the volleyball court and base of the slope and formalizing a dirt path to avoid further erosion. Crews will also landscape, pending weather and drought conditions, according to Grant.
The department also plans to replace the tarmac sidewalks throughout E.S. King Village with brick and cement pathways, beginning on the Jackson Street side. West Manor will see updated sprinkler systems and continued installation of ADA-compliant utilities in some apartments.

Facts about FAFSA
How to pay for 2008 – 2009Julie Mallette, director of the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid, said she suggests reapplying for financial aid through federal and state applications by March to receive priority status and optimize aid amounts.
“Especially freshman, they don’t thing this is an annual event,” she said.
According to Mallette, applicants should submit their forms as early as possible, “even if that means they have to estimate.” The Free Application for Federal Student Aid can be amended through September if those estimates change, she said.
The FAFSA can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov; in a downloadable PDF file from www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov; or on paper by requesting a copy from 1-800-4FED-AID. Online submissions with e-mail addresses are processed in three to five days; mailed applications take two to three weeks to process.
You’ve got mail”The University is communicating almost exclusively by e-mail,” Mallette said. So, she said, checking Unity account e-mails and MyPack Portal regularly is imperative. ___________________________________________
New to the Campus Police calendar
Who you gonna call?Capt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police said the department has established Escort Service hours from 6:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. every night.
For the remainder of the winter, students can call Campus Police at (919)515-3000 or use one of the blue light emergency phone located throughout campus.
Where the party at?Kappa Alpha Psi’s Talley party last semester earned them accolades from Campus Police and opened the door for other organizations to host parties at the student center, Barnwell said.
“They really showed what it means to be a host,” he said. “And I hope that every organization that holds parties at the venue will model their behavior.”
According to Barnwell, the first Talley party of the semester is scheduled for January 18.
The real CSIIn February, Campus Police plans to offer a simulated police academy to civilians, including firearms, driver training, traffic stops and crime scene investigation, Barnwell said.
The program will help civilians understand what the officers are doing out in the field, he said, and emphasize the “shared responsibility” between the force and the general public to maintain a safe community.
