Like the Hebrews at Mt. Masada, Custer at Little Big Horn and the gunfight at the OK Corral, Student Senate is making its last stand. The Elections Committee, headed by Kevin Hassell, announced it was going full speed ahead with elections even though Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Tom Stafford made it abundantly clear he will nullify elections if they continue allowing part-time students to run and vote for Student Government officials.
The feeling in the Student Senate Chamber last night reflected this attitude of banding together for what they believe in. One Student Senator believed that Student Senate should go on with its elections and recognize the winners regardless of whether Stafford doesn’t.
It is really refreshing to see the Student Senate stand up for something it actually believes in and the members are banding together for the students — something we rarely see them doing.
Unfortunately, it may be too late for them. Instead of a fair duel at high noon between Student Senate and the administration, the balance definitely leans towards Stafford. It’s like he stands 10 paces away with a bazooka and Student Senate is holding a water gun.
We believe if they reflected the same enthusiasm for this cause as they did for others in the past that reflect the interests of the students, perhaps all of this could have been adverted.
Perhaps the administration would have met students half way if it had shown the same commitment to the students it is showing with this cause.
Student Senate is for sure the underdog; there is no arguing that. It is like Rudy, except it most likely won’t have a thrilling moment at the end of the game. It won’t be carried off the field in glory; instead, it will most likely go down in flames. If the elections are nullified, perhaps it will be a wake-up call to the future Student Government leaders that they should pick their battles and always fight for the students and not let politics get in the way.
We’re looking forward to that day.
