Eighty-six bodies, all moving to the same rhythm and dripping with sweat, filled the upper basketball courts of Carmichael Gymnasium Tuesday night.
The exhausted students finished their day by participating in N.C. State’s Largest Fitness Class, a 90-minute workout that combined aspects of four of their regularly taught group fitness classes.
Crystal Johnson, a senior in accounting, began the class by running the students through a warm-up session. Johnson is an instructor for Campus Recreation and teaches some of the group fitness classes.
“Lately we’ve been seeing an increase [in attendees] because students are becoming more health-conscious,” Johnson said.
Some students in the class, like Laura Douglas, a senior in chemistry, were students who typically attend the group fitness classes.
“I was actually going to the abs class tonight but they cancelled it, so I came here,” Douglas said.
The large size of the class was due partly to students bringing along friends or workout buddies to the class with them. Douglas attended the class with her friend Amanda Riggs, a senior in biochemistry and botany.
“We both decided to drag ourselves up here,” Riggs said.
Other students brought up friends as well. Jessica Lee, a sophomore in communication and public relations, brought her classmate, Daniel Glauber, a sophomore in technology education.
“I drug him up here,” Lee said. “I thought it would be fun.”
Campus Recreation made sure everyone walked out of the event with something to take home. Not only did they provide a rounded and intense workout, but they also held raffles for workout gear and gave away prizes at the door.
