He is an entrepreneur in the making.
IRC President Cody Williams said he plans on opening his own business in Raleigh after graduation.
Williams, a senior in agriculture business management, has been involved in many different aspects of student life and draws from experience gained while serving as an alumni ambassador and the Pack Howl chair.
One of his main initiatives, he said, is to focus on patronage and parternships with businesses on Hillsborough Street. Williams said he plans to develop a student guide — providing students with reviews, hours of operation and contact information.
He said he also plans to reinstate the “Taste of Hillsborough Street” celebration with food samples, live music and events to bring the venues and university community together.
Williams said one of his strongest attributes is his involvement with many different aspects of the University — and absence from Student Government.
He pointed to the other frontrunners, Will Quick and Will Langley, as having been involved with Student Government for a significant portion of their college careers, highlighting an important difference between him and his opponents.
“I haven’t spent all my time in Student Government; I haven’t spent any time in Student Government,” he said.
Williams said his self-removal from University politics gives him a broader grasp on the University as a whole.
Over his two years working with the IRC, Williams said he has seen the organization grow, and he has built strong leadership skills.
“Part of leadership is the relations you build,” he said.
Williams cited strained relationships with members of the administration.
“I’ll be working next year to open the lines of communication and improve our relationship with the administration,” he said.
Although Williams said he will work closely with the administration and other parties to accomplish the goals of the student body, he said he will not be controlled by those in power.
“You have to keep those relationships, but you’ve been voted in by the students to advocate for them,” he said.
