“If you have a heart, buy a pie,” she said.
Metzler sat among five other volunteers — each covered from head to toe in chocolate pudding and whipped cream.
They all spent time in one of the chairs lined up in front of Harrelson in an effort to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, Alpha Delta Pi’s philanthropy event. Students passing by the event paid $1 to throw a pie at one of the volunteers. ADPi was able to raise $337 today through selling pies, which helped it reach its final total of $1137. The other money was raised through donations.
The pies were made from individual serving snack packs and whipped cream.
“The real whip[ped] cream will melt, but the Cool Whip stays in tact,” Adair Calamos, a senior in visual arts, said.
Volunteers included ADPi sisters and leaders from other campus groups, such as Pi Kappa Phi President Andrew Gordon, a junior in biological sciences. He said the experience wasn’t all fun and games.
“The worst part is the pies are cold,” said Andrew Gordon, a junior in biological sciences.
Pi Kappa Phi brothers showed up and pummeled Gordon with pies.
“They were getting me back for all the stuff I won’t let them do in the house,” Gordon said. “If I was sitting out here longer all the brothers in class would come out and get me.”
All of the volunteers were students and some had to go home and change before class. Others, like Katelyn Purnell, a sophomore in civil engineering, had to go to class still covered in pudding.
“[When] I walked in my teacher made me explain what happened,” Purnell said. “The kid beside me wanted to move.”
For those who didn’t have to rush to class, ADPi members made sure to bring large black garbage bags for them to wear over their clothing.
“I’m just trying not to get [pudding] on my car seat,” Metzler said, after covering up with a bag. “That’s the funniest thing — walking to my car and everyone staring at me.”
