The last time the women’s tennis team won a game in the ACC tournament, Bill Clinton was president, “Armageddon” was popular in the box office and “Seinfeld” was coming to a storied end on television. That year was 1998.
Despite this fact, though, the team said it believes the eight-year drought will be coming to an end this morning.
“We feel really confident and we don’t want to think too far ahead — just take it one match at a time and do everything we can our first match,” senior Nandita Chandrasekar said. “We’re pretty good at turning things around when we need to because we always know what we need to do.”
N.C. State’s first-round match will be against Maryland at 9 a.m. today. The Wolfpack lost to the Terrapins 5-2 at College Park on April 7.
“I was hoping we’d get to play Maryland and we do. So I’m looking forward to that match,” coach Hans Olsen said. “That particular match-up is going to be really hard-fought and come down to the tennis on the court, and I feel really good about our team.”
The rest of the team echoed the sentiments of Olsen and players said they look forward to the match against the eighth-seeded Terps.
“I think we have a really good chance to beat Maryland, even though we lost in the duel match, but everybody is really pumped up for it, so I’m expecting a first-round win,” Barbara Orlay said.
Olsen proposed a solution to the woes State had against Maryland, and it is a plan he hopes the Pack can effectively carry out.
“If we have a little bit more energy in the doubles and we know the four through six singles matches went three sets, so I think being a little bit more poised on the big points in the singles will put us in good shape, too,” Olsen said.
State comes into the tournament having lost three of its past four matches, but it did squeeze out six more wins overall and three more ACC victories than last year’s squad.
The recent losses have all come against ACC opponents, but they are not affecting the optimism of the team, according to Olsen.
“The teams we’ve lost to have outplayed us, but the girls have still played really well,” he said. “If we keep moving forward with what we’ve been doing, we’re right on track. The focus is great and they’ll be ready to go.”
