Recently Student Senators Barnes, Fabricius, Godfrey, Heath and Hutcherson drafted a bill to impeach Student Body President Whil Piavis.
Does that seem like old news? Well it kind of is, because it is the second time members of YOUR Student Senate have attempted to impeach YOUR student body president.
The question we want answered by all the students who read this editorial is: Are you dissatisfied with the performance of YOUR president?
While Piavis has not been the greatest president we have had, he surely does not deserve to be impeached for his actions. The charges leveled against Piavis by these senators are nothing more than the results of a group of students playing government. They have had it in for Piavis from the beginning and are trying to remove him mainly out of spite when his term in office is near completion.
Now that our disdain for the senators wishing to impeach Piavis is out of the way, let’s get to the more serious issue at hand.
The Student Senate’s reckless and pointless attempts to be real politicians are getting a little out of hand. We get the feeling that as the student senators learn something new in political science class they automatically jump at the opportunity to try it out in their “government.”
“‘Impeachment!’ That sounds AWESOME!”
What Student Senate needs to consider is everyone on campus is getting a little tired of its behavior, especially the administration. Unlike the real government it tries to be, Student Senate actually has to answer to a higher power other than those who elected them. The administration is seriously considering taking drastic actions because of the behavior of this Student Senate.
If they don’t want to see their precious Senate dissolved or lose all its credibility with the University it needs to stop acting so catty and try to work for the students, which is what they are elected to do. There is a big world outside the second floor of Witherspoon.
We’ll point you in the right direction.
We students are a little concerned with the restrictions facing us next football season. There are students on this campus who feel the idea of being frisked before we go into Carter-Finely Stadium is somewhat scary.
Students are being shot and held at gunpoint on or near campus because of a lack of security.
There you go, start working on those REAL problems and leave all the partisan bickering to the real government. We have problems here on campus and we need action immediately from a body that we might still have a small shred of confidence in.
