When did N.C. State turn into such a violent place?
Seriously, we want to know.
With the recent car jacking on campus that ended with someone being shot, we are really questioning Campus Police’s ability to keep us safe.
Honestly, in the last year there have been numerous violent crimes committed against students on campus that have included the use of guns. This surge in violent crimes culminated Wednesday night with the shooting of a student by other students after a car jacking.
Enough is enough.
We need a guarantee from Campus Police that says we will be safe on this campus to study late, drive from one side of campus to the other and, basically, live our lives with a degree of normalcy we believe we are owed.
Security does not end when the sun goes down, and blue emergency beacons spaced throughout campus will do little if they are the only line of defense during a violent crime.
There are still so many areas of campus that are unlit and prime targets for people seeking to rob, rape or assault students walking from one area of campus to another. We believe Campus Police recognizes the urgency for security, at least we hope they do, but the time for action is now.
Before the University spends another dime on other matters, we need to correct this problem, which is the most serious issue facing our campus today.
If they aren’t willing to correct the problem, then we students need to do something. It is time to take back our campus.
We see the importance of Campus Escorts, but they can only do so much.
All of those organizations doing philanthropic activities, perhaps your time and resources would be better utilized with a neighborhood watch of campus.
Each week a different organization could pledge its time to walk campus, so students studying late at the library or walking to the car after an event won’t have a legitimate fear of being attacked. We can make the difference, and this cause is as worthy as any other.
We are a community, and it is time we start acting like one. N.C. State is our home, and we should treat it that way.
So for anyone seeking to do harm to students — your days are numbered.
