Melodies echo and bounce against the walls in the classroom in Price Music Hall. Every few bars, the conductor, Tom Koch, interrupts the voices to make a correction.
“Fast. You need to end a word,” Koch, administrative choral director, instructs the students in front of him.
The students listen to what he said, a few make a note in their music, then sing that section of the music again. They are intently working to prepare for the Fall Choral Collage, which will include the Concert Choir, Women’s Choir, Men’s Choir, University Singers, Chamber Singers, Grains of Time and Ladies in Red.
Koch said he thinks the students will be prepared for the concert. According to him, they have been practicing since August and he has seen significant improvement in their performance since then.
“Their energy level is better than in the past,” Koch said.
Al Sturgis, adjunct assistant music professor, said he agreed the students will have energy during the concert. He said they will be energized by the concert setting.
“They will surpass everyone’s expectations,” Sturgis said.
However, Karrica Finch, a sophomore in art and design and first soprano in the Women’s Choir, said she doesn’t believe the choirs will be ready for the concert. She said it is hard to learn 10 songs in 50 minutes, especially when all the students’ abilities are unknown to each other.
Finch said she would still like students to come to the concert because it would be a good use of their evening to watch their peers sing.
Koch said students should support other students and the concert would be a time to do that.
“[It will be an] opportunity for students to listen to good art music that they might not otherwise be exposed to,” he said.
It is going to be quality entertainment, according to Sturgis. He said students should come support their peers who have excelled in this area and have such wonderful talent.
Koch said the concert will be inspirational.
The concert is Friday at 7 p.m. in Talley Student Center Ballroom.
