Two people are hospitalized after a wreck that occurred at the intersection of Avent Ferry Road and Varsity Drive Monday morning, officials on the scene said.
According to the police report, a blue Ford Explorer was traveling north on Avent Ferry Road toward main campus when a blue Nissan Xterra failed to yield, turning left into the oncoming traffic. The Explorer struck the Xterra on the right side, causing the Nissan to roll an estimated two times before stopping in the Varsity Drive entrance to Centennial Campus.
According to Sgt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police, the passengers of the Xterra had to be extracted from the vehicle using the Jaws of Life. However, he said the extent of the injuries was unknown.
Jason Isaacs, a senior in political science, was the driver of the Explorer. He said he was on his way to East Village to eat lunch when the accident occurred.
“I didn’t even have time to react,” Isaacs said. “They just pulled out right in front of me. I just couldn’t believe it.”
Isaac said he didn’t sustain any injuries, and after checking on the passengers of the Nissan, he called the police.
According to Eric Wiseman, deputy fire marshall with Campus Fire Protection, his support unit was one of the last to arrive at the scene around 10:57 a.m. He said by the time the unit arrived, the “extrication” of the Nissan passengers was well underway.
The driver of the Xterra, Jesus Eduardo Gonzalez Cisneras, along with an unidentified person, were transported to WakeMed Hospital in Cary. He was charged with not having an operator’s license, as well as a failure to yield.
Cisneras refused to comment Monday.
