They’re in motion all over campus, but unlike their noisy predecessors, they move softly.
They slip in to classes, skip over the bricks — and unlike those terribly tricky stilettos, slipping into a pair of flats is just as versatile as it is comfortable.
“They’re definitely more comfortable to walk around in everyday situations,” Ashley “Tuggy” Tugman, a senior in business management, said.
Tugman said she became “enamored” with the flat trend last spring, and she is glad the shoes are holding out through fall.
“I definitely just treated myself for finishing exams with a new red pair of flats,” she said.
Elizabeth Brown, junior in textiles and apparel management, said she is also glad the flat-shoe trend is sticking around.
“I have them on right now!” she said.
Brown said she thinks they lasted through the summer into fall because they are a welcome change from the traditional high-heeled dress shoes. She said one of her favorite things about flats is that they are a “dress up, dress down item.”
Flats come in all varieties from metallic, jeweled flats to wear with a dress or skirt to simple, gray flats to wear with pants or shorts for the more causal dresser.
“I like them a lot with pants,” Brown said. “It gives you a little bit more of a polished look than just tennis shoes or flip flops.”
Tugman said she is particularly partial to pointy-toed flats.
“Especially being a taller female, they still make me feel dressy — but not intimidating,” Tugman said.
