In an effort to challenge the University’s alcohol policy after a Jan. 24 revision, the organizers of the College of Design’s Halloween Bash, an annual theme party, proposed a petition Sept. 15 at the student organization fair.
The petition will be unleashed to Tom Stafford, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, at “Dinner with the Dean” on Wednesday. Thus far, the petition holds 200 signatures.
Diana Fakhoury, president of Design Council and a senior in art and design, said the council plans to hold the petition for about a week longer.
“We’re going to fill it up; three columns on six feet,” Fakhoury said.
The petition, located on the second floor of the Brooks Breezeway outside of the external relations office at the College of Design, states, “We the students, petition the reservation of the College of Design’s Halloween Bash in the ancient tradition of festive rites complete with festive beverages. We maintain that it is the privilege of mature adults to act like mature adults both in sobriety and in gaiety.”
Becca Mayfield, a junior in graphic design, and Riley Bunn, a junior in environmental design in architecture, are the authors of the petition.
“The Halloween Bash has always been and always will be a ‘blast bash,'” Karrica Finch, a sophomore in art and design, said. “As far as alcohol goes, people will find a way to drink whether it’s there or not.”
If the petition is not passed, Fakhoury said the Design Council will still go through with the Halloween Bash, which will most likely be held at Brooks Courtyard or within close vicinity.
“My expectation is that everyone will try and fight for what they feel is right, but if it doesn’t turn out in our favor, we’ll still have a blast at the bash,” Finch said.
Fakhoury indicated that event planners will make the best out of the bash, even with restrictions.
“We’ll try to get some rocking music, and people will party down,” she said. “Bash lives on.”
