A transformer located in Poe Hall failed on Sunday afternoon, activating a fire alarm and filling the first floor with smoke.
All occupants evacuated the building.
Raleigh Fire Department responded with two trucks and Campus Police taped off a perimeter around the building.
“Everything is secure now,” Bill Stevenson, fire marshal for the University, said after the fire trucks departed and the police lines were removed. “The building is open.”
Stevenson said nobody was injured and there was no damage to the building. He said there was a little odor, but the ventilation system would dissipate it within a few hours.
The transformer was in an elevator shaft in Poe Hall. The shaft and the one adjacent are temporarily out of order.
“The only consequence is two elevators are down,” Jim Semple, director of insurance and risk management, said.
According to Stevenson, the elevators will be operational again sometime Monday. In the meantime, the other two elevators are still functional.
