As part of Friday Fest, a night of free games and food, the Union Activities Board presents the first in what it hopes to be many installments of Laugh Lounge, a stand-up comedy show that is free to all students.
The UAB is sponsoring Friday Fest from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Laugh Lounge, which was organized with help from Goodnights Comedy Club, will feature three up-and-coming comedians and can been seen at Stewart Theater at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.
UAB President, David “Dokey” Ashmore said the event is sure to be excellent and he expects the comedians to be top notch.
“Brad Reeder of Goodnights selected the comedians,” Ashmore, a senior in computer and electrical engineering, said. “He helped us get [comedian] Demetri Martin last year.”
The show is headlined by comedian Kris Shaw and will also feature performances by acclaimed comedians Johnny Millwater and Jalyssa Castrodale.
“Students can pick up their tickets at Ticket Central in Tally,” Ashmore said. “They can get up to two tickets per student ID.”
Jiwei Zhu, a sophomore in biological sciences, said he went to see several shows last year and can’t wait to see what the UAB has to offer this year.
“The Demetri Martin show was wonderful last year,” said Zhu. “I am really looking forward to seeing the show tonight.”
Brian Slightom, a junior in computer engineering, said he is less excited about this show than others he has attended in the past.
“I want to see bigger names,” Slightom said. “I am not that interested in local comedians.”
Ashmore explained that the UAB would like to bring more comedians to the campus and establish the Laugh Lounge as a more regular event, but until they can acquire more funding, it is an impossibility.
“We would like to get to that state,” Ashmore said. “We don’t have the money right now; but if we get more funds, that is one thing we’re trying to set up.”
In the meantime, Ashmore encourages all students to attend the festivities tonight to take advantage of the free food and entertainment.
“It’s a great way to see a good show and get a lot of free laughs,” Ashmore said. “Also, it’s part of Friday Fest, so it’s a good way to win some great prizes.”
