The Bell Tower. 9:30 a.m.
Run down Hillsborough for barely a minute, then take a left where Darryl’s used to be.
Turn right at the bank.
By this time, you ought to be breaking a sweat. At the very least, breathing really hard.
Look at Cafe Carolina as you go by it on the left. It’s tempting to stop but you can’t. After all, they do have good sandwiches.
Coast downhill past the shops of Cameron Village.
Turn the slight corner and be met with the first challenge yet — the first hill that leads to St. Mary’s.
But that’s easy. You don’t even feel a burn yet.
You run by McDonald’s and Starbuck’s and think, “I could still get breakfast.” But no, you’re on a time schedule.
When you pass The Mellow Mushroom, it’s clear sailing under the railroad tracks and Capital Boulevard. The long hill afterwards isn’t even worth acknowledging as an opponent.
And there you are, at the very end of Peace Street facing your toughest challenge yet — scarfing down a dozen doughnuts and getting back to campus before 10:30 a.m.
Not to mention the hills you just coasted down you have to force your way back up — on a sugar-filled stomach.
This is a brilliant concept Chris McCoy fathomed that has HUGE potential to be a long-standing tradition for NCSU. The Krispy Kreme Challenge has already gained national attention from ESPN, but it also does an awesome service for the community.
All proceeds from registration fees go to the N.C. Children’s Hospital.
There are 30,000 students that can do this. It’s fun; it’s unique, and it’s for an awesome cause that does not require your whole day.
Recovering from it might — but that’s worth it.
More than 30 students have already registered for this, and that ought to at least double before the deadline closes Friday night.
Come. Bring a friend.
At least you’ll get a free breakfast.
