As many left N.C. State for new experiences, friends and fun, many arrive at NCSU for the same thing. The University lends the use of their facilities to many summer camps throughout the summer.
Summer camps such as design camp, environmental science program, young writer’s workshop, science of sports and many sports camps use campus facilities.
One of the summer camps this summer is the All Arts and Science Camp with about 288 seven- to 15-year-old campers who learn about famous artists and scientists during a week-long stay. Kisha Carmichael, director of the camp, said it’s good for children and teens.
“It exposes children to things they would not be exposed to in regular school,” Carmichael said. It also exposes them to college life in general because they stay in the college dorms and eat the college food, she said.
Some University students view summer camps a bit differently.
“I don’t mind it, but it’s really hard to concentrate on a Spanish test with little kids screaming in the next room,” Lizzy Adams, a junior in First Year College, said.
Other University students are enthusiastic about the education of younger generations.
“I am really excited to be sharing my beautiful school with kids in summer camp and I think it’s great that we can all learn together in one great big happy family,” David Sulock, a senior in physics and computer science, said.
Classes are offered in pre-med, marine science, fashion and interior design, digital photography, animation and claymation, among others.
Carmichael refers to the camp as “eduplay”: learning and playing at the same time. This camp allows children to explore the many avenues of careers in an academic light as well as have fun.
“Classes are very scholastic, but at the same time fun and hands on,” Carmichael said, adding that they also teach children life lessons. “They learn what it’s like to be a good citizen and add positive attitude to the community and people they interact with.”
