After finishing the first day in seventh place at Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore., for the NCAA Championships, the men’s golf team dropped out of contention last Friday with two straight days of over-par golf.
Junior Garry Hill led the team last Wednesday with a score of three-under par while Stephen Lewton shot 2 under par and Jerry Richardson was even par. The Wolfpack had a combined score of 4 under par after the opening round.
However, Lewton and Hill struggled the following day — each with a score of 4 over par. With a team score of 3 over par and a 12th place standing going into Friday, State needed to remain in the top-15 to make the cut and continue to the final round Saturday.
But, after disappointing performances from Hill, freshman Darren Blair and freshman Nathan Spoon Friday, State was out of luck.
The Pack finished in 18th place out of 30 teams and could not continue to the fourth round. While the loss eliminated the team from the tournament, Lewton was allowed to continue because he was one of the top-six golfers whose team did not make it to Saturday.
Lewton took advantage of his opportunity. After an even-par round Saturday and an even-par score for the tournament, he finished his career with a top-20 finish as he tied for 20th place. For the tournament, Lewton had one eagle and 14 birdies.
