The men’s tennis team didn’t start off its conference play in winning fashion, but that changed Sunday. The team had lost its first two ACC matches to No. 12 Wake Forest and No. 3 Virgina. But in the final singles play between senior William Noblitt and Virginia Tech’s Nicolas Delgado on Sunday, Noblitt took it to the third set, defeating Delgado 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, and earning the team’s first conference win.
During Sunday’s match against Virginia Tech, the Pack lost the doubles point. The No. 11 combo of Nick Cavaday and William Noblitt lost to Brandon Corace and Arvid Puranen, 8-6. Senior Andre Iriarte and sophomore Christian Welte also lost. Sophomore Jay Weinacker and freshman James McGee won their doubles match with out a problem against Albert Larregola and Alexei Sergeev, 8-1 .
During singles play, Cavaday suffered an injury during the third game and had to forfeit his match, 3-0. James McGee lost his match against the Hokies’ Albert Larregola. The Pack had to win the rest of its matches to earn the victory.
Both Jay Weinacker and Andre Iriarte won their matches. Weinacker won the team’s first singles match by defeating Yoann Re, 6-3, 6-1. Iriarte vanquished Brandon Corace, 6-4, 6-3.
During the second set of the match between Christian Welte and Tech’s Pedro Graber, Welte had to take an injury time out for his hamstring.
“I lunged out wide for a ball and my hamstring kind of tighten up.” Welte said. “We put some wrap on it. We’re going to go see how it is. It should be alright.”
Welte said playing Wake Forest and Virginia this past week had some influence on Sunday’s match.
“When we played Wake, I didn’t finish very strong and I tried to start off strong in the Virginia match and tried to bring it over,” Welte said. “I started off the year pretty strong, and that was my first loss. So coming back strong in the Virginia match was brought over to today.”
Welte did go on to win his match 6-4, 6-4, Leaving William Noblitt left on the court to play out his match. It was up to Noblitt to win his match.
“I was kind of keeping track of the scores,” Noblitt said. “I saw Andre at No. 5 was winning. He was winning like 5-2 in the second set and he had won the first set. I saw Welte down here winning his second set, so at that point I kind of realized it was going to come down to me.”
