The Elections Commission released a ballot Thursday afternoon without the name of Student Senate president candidate James Hankins. The cutting of Hankins’ name from the ballot leaves only Jon Chichwak, a junior in political science, as the lone candidate for the position.According to Hankins, he had been in discussions with Paul Cousins, the director of the office of student conduct, about his eligibility to run. He also went through the appeals process to try to get back on the ballot.”I really felt like I was not treated fairly during the process,” Hankins said. “There seemed to be some premeditated feelings. [Cousins’] judgment according to the petition was a complete conflict of interest.”Hankins said he will now go through the process of grievance against Cousins.”I’m going to take that as far as possible until the issues are settled,” Hankins said. “The election situation is what it is, but this is bigger than that — it’s about me as a student.”Chichwak said he found out about the decision around 6 p.m. last night. “I was really disappointed,” Chichwak said. “I like James a lot and I was looking forward to how this campaign would come out. I wanted to see what the students thought of the candidates.”Chichwak said he had not talked to Hankins Thursday, but he did wish him luck Wednesday night and hoped Hankins would go through with the appeal. The books are open for Student Senate president until 5 p.m. today, as candidates are still able to file for the elections set to take place Monday and Tuesday.Chichwak said he will continue to campaign through the weekend, and wait to see if anyone will file to run against him.”The campaign is not over. We’re not going to go pick up the signs or anything,” Chichwak said. “If I can get people to vote in the other races, it’s a plus.”
