The softball team (29-16) will take part in a doubleheader today on the road against UNC-Greensboro — only two days after it defeated Charlotte on Tuesday at home in a doubleheader, 6-0 and 8-0.
Freshman Allison Presnell said she always looks forward to playing local teams — especially teams within the state
“They’re a tough team,” Presnell said. “It’s always good to play teams that are in the area. We’re looking at it one game at a time. Just continue to hit the ball and play solid defense.”
The Spartans (21-25) are coming off a loss against Appalachian State from Sat., April 7. Coach Lisa Navas said UNCG is a good team and that they have been having an up and down year, but have a coach that has been there for a number of years.
She said despite some of the Spartans’ struggles, the Wolfpack can’t have a letdown against the in-state opponent.
“They always come to play. We got to have our ‘A game’ going and go after them,” Navas said.
Despite playing well of late, senior Abbie Sims said the previous games against Charlotte helped prepare the team for UNCG.
“We need to stay focused all seven innings,” Sims said. “Not give up hits or give up easy plays in the fifth, sixth, seventh innings. That’s something that will help us out.”
However, Sims said the team does not have a specific game plan for today’s matches.
“Take care of the stuff that we can control,” she said. “Hit some more, get some offense going.”
Even though State has won five straight games, including three straight shutouts, Sims said the team still has plenty it needs to work on — especially on the offensive end.
“Getting some more bunts down. Moving the runner. Making sure we hit the ball on the ground because we had a lot of pop ups [against Charlotte].” Sims said.
But Navas said the Charlotte doubleheaders should provide the team with plenty of confidence.
“It’s the confidence that we need. Nobody was down,” Navas said. “We’ve asked different kids to step up throughout the year and now they’re doing it. That worked out well for us.”
Start time for the first game is at 4 p.m., while the second game starts at 6 p.m.
