Larry Harris, the men’s basketball assistant coach, will likely meet with someone from the Raleigh Police Department this week for an interview about a complaint he has filed against one of its officers, his lawyer said Monday.
Harris has been charged with “resisting/obstructing a public officer,” and in conjunction with the same event, filed a complaint against officer R.W. King for “excessive force and conduct unbecoming an officer,” according to the Associated Press.
Lee Turner, Harris’ attorney, said Monday that he filed the complaint Thursday before he saw what the police were releasing about the incident.
After viewing what the police have released and hearing Harris’ version of events, Turner said the two accounts “differ greatly.”
According to Turner, after the interviews of Harris and King about the complaint this week, the complaint would probably go the district attorney’s office or the magistrate’s office.
Turner said he could not recall the exact court date set for Harris’ charges, but that it was still a few weeks away at least.
Athletics Director Lee Fowler had not released a public statement of support for Harris as of late Tuesday.
Turner said while he could not speak for the University, he thinks the athletic department sees it as being in its best interest not to comment yet on the issue. Turner added he doesn’t believe it has anything to do with a lack of support for Harris.
