N.C. State handled Virginia Tech 41-6 on Sunday at Reynolds Coliseum — continuing its success with a six-match winning streak, with all three senior starters winning their matches.
“We wrestled great, we definitely looked like N.C. State today,” coach Carter Jordan said.
After an initial forfeit by Virginia Tech in the opening 125-pound weight class, State never looked back as the team only recorded two losses out of the 10 matches.
“This was a big win, to beat a conference team like this, I mean we handled them — to put up 40 points against a conference team is a hell of a performance,” Jordan said.
The seniors set the tone for the rest of the team as 133-pounder Garret Cummings recorded a 3-2 win, while 174-pounder Rick Brownlee and Jainor Palma, the No. 9 heavyweight in the country, scored pins.
“I was extremely excited for all three seniors that were competing today because they all went out there and won, and won convincingly,” Jordan said.
One of those convincing wins, according to Jordan, was Brownlee’s who was trailing his opponent 6-0 in the last minute and 30 seconds of the match; then he turned the match around and got the win as he got his opponent in a headlock.
“I got down in the beginning and was losing,” Brownlee said. “When I got a chance to get back on my feet, I just went for it.”
Senior Jainor Palma said his job had been to hold on to the win.
“I don’t want to let my teammates down, they wrestle great, I’m just going to finish it off, I do my part in my weight-class,” Palma said.
The senior-day atmosphere proved to be a boost for the Pack, according to Brownlee.
“I was just real pumped up, it’s my last match, senior night, and I just wanted to give my all, no regrets,” Brownlee said. “My family is here and it just felt great pulling the win off like that.”
Cummings said having his parents make the trip really influenced the way he performed on the mat.
“It was nice that my parents came down from Pennsylvania,” Cummings said. “[Senior day] is kind of in the back of your head the whole time — there’s no way I’m going out in Reynolds on a loss to end a career.”
