SoftballSims, Gelbard honored for performances
After the softball team finished the Carolina Classic 3-1, two players were named to the all-tournament team.
Senior pitcher Abbie Sims and senior third baseman Heather Gelbard on Monday were both honored for their showings at the three-day event in Chapel Hill this past weekend.
Sims and Gelbard powered the Pack to victories against Ohio, Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina. State fell 5-3 to Penn State on Saturday afternoon.
Gelbard batted .444 while totaling four hits, three runs, two home runs and five RBI. Sims batted .333, including a home run and a double in the weekend tournament.
Sims also pitched State to two wins, including a no-hitter against Ohio in the first game. Sims gave up two hits against Gardner-Webb. She tallied five walks against 28 strikeouts in three pitching appearances.
Sims was also named the ACC player of the week for her contributions to State’s 3-1 record last weekend.
State returns to action this weekend at the Cox Communications Classic in Gainesville, Fla. — a three-day event hosted by the University of Florida. The Pack will play two games on Friday, facing Marshall at 9 a.m., and then playing Fordham at 11:15 a.m.

WrestlingFreshman named wrestler of the week
The ACC on Monday named Darrion Caldwell wrestler of the week, following his three-win week. Caldwell, a freshman wrestling in the 141-pound weight class won his bout in each of the Pack’s matches against North Carolina, Virginia and George Mason, improving his season record to 14-3.
Caldwell, ranked No. 20 in the Intermat/NWCA rankings released Feb. 6, recorded two pins and a major decision en route to the honor.
Against UNC, he scored an 18-7 major decision against the Tar Heels’ Mike Rappo. Later, against Virginia, Caldwell pinned Kellon Balum in just more than four minutes. Caldwell’s award-winning week ended in a 26-second pin against George Mason’s Mostafa Ibrahim, which was the second time this season Caldwell recorded a pin in less than 30 seconds.

GolfFormer Pack golfer wins tournament
Stephen Lewton, who completed his eligibility in the spring of 2006, won the 100th New South Wales Amateur Championship in Australia.
Lewton tallied a 64 in the third round to propel himself into a tie for the lead with final-round play remaining.
A final-round score of 71 was good enough to clinch a one-stroke win at the event for Lewton.
Lewton has also won the 36-hole Avondale Medal in New South Wales, Australia.
