After an upset win against No. 18-ranked Indiana, the wrestling team will compete against North Carolina — this time at Reynolds Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
According to coach Carter Jordan, the win against Indiana had the team learning a valuable lesson.
“Hard work pays off,” he said.
Senior Jainor Palma said the win should let other teams know that N.C. State can compete with any team.
“It showed that we can wrestle anybody in the country,” Palma said. “That just showed us that we’ve should have won some matches before and we lost some really close, and it just showed how good we can become. We still have a lot to prove and show off.”
The last time the Wolfpack wrestled the Tar Heels, it lost 16-14. Junior Jeremy Colbert lost in a major decision. The Pack led 14-13 with redshirt freshman Taylor Cummings’ match remaining. With seven seconds remaining in the bout, Cummings was slammed to the mat, landing on his head.
State could have taken the forfeit, which would have clinched the victory for the Pack. The team decided against taking the forfeit, electing for Cummings to continue. He eventually lost his match 9-2.
Jordan said Cummings will come back and compete as hard as he can.
“He’ll go out and wrestle really hard,” Jordan said. “I expect all of our guys to go out there and compete. That was a situation that was kind of a glimpse into his character. Certainly, we weren’t going to win the duel that way. We did the right thing to continue the match.”
Both Cummings and Colbert said they are excited about the match tonight and are hopeful that this time around they will get the win.
“It’s going to mean a lot to me,” Colbert said. “I’m expected to beat him going into it. I’m going in with confidence. I really think that it will be a different outcome going into it this time.”
Cummings said if they were to beat North Carolina, it would be something he wouldn’t forget.
“It would just be a lifetime memory,” Cummings said. “I don’t think that I could put words on it right now because I haven’t gone through it, but it would really mean a lot to me and the team, and I could remember that forever.”
For Palma, this will be his last time wrestling against the Tar Heels in the regular season. A win for him means a lot, but the post season means more.
“It would be great,” Palma said. “I have to be honest and say that I am looking more forward to the ACC championship seeding so I think that team wise, it would be nice to go out winners.”
