Good ole boys Tishamingo keep the jukebox rockin’ and the toes tapping on their Feb. 20th release of The Point. For a band with such a straight-up Southern rock sound you think they would have a more normal name, but hey Lynyrd Skynyrd made it work right?
Tips on making sweet band names aren’t the only things these dudes borrow from Skynyrd, ramblin’ guitar solos and country drawls are as plentiful as fried chicken and sweet tea on a hot summer day in Georgia. The press release accompanying this monster of a release states that our boys have toured with the likes of Skynyrd, .38 Special and Sister Hazel, and to say that The Point sounds like a rehashing of all three would be an understatement.
“Get on Back” starts the album with a bang, and others like “Are we Rollin'” and “Bad News” will keep the audience rocking while “Mitchell” and “Tennessee Mountain Angel” slow things down a bit.
Lots of life lessons straight out of the good book and woeful tales of heartbreak like in “This Time”, as front man Cameron Williams asks “Where did I go wrong this time?” incessantly. The Western-sounding “Devil’s Love Song” makes one feel as if you are riding off into the sunset, a fitting close.
It’s important to keep in mind that the guys in Tishamingo aren’t pushing into new ground with The Point, they’ve found a sound that works and are sticking with it. And in terms of blending straight up Southern rock with a classic rock attitude, they do it well.
