After falling to No. 47 Arkansas last Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., the women’s tennis team (2-1) will play at home this weekend against Penn State today at 4 p.m., and Florida International on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Coach Hans Olsen, though suffering an early loss in the season, said the girls gained a lot from the experience.
“The girls gained a lot of toughness in that situation on the road,” Olsen said. “Our team played well, competed really hard. [Arkansas] just got a few big points and that was the difference in the match. I think Friday our girls will be more tough coming out of the gates. More ready to get after it than a week ago.”
Sophomore Alejandra Guerra feels that despite the loss, the team is excited to play this weekend and has been working on certain parts of its game to improve its play.
“That was our first tough match of the season. Definitely, I think we all played good,” Guerra said. “The crowd over there was pretty into the matches which is kind of a hard situation for the start of the year. It just benefits us and will just make us better as a team. We’re ready for this weekend. We’ve been practicing since we got back from Arkansas. Trying to work on the start of the point [and] being more aggressive. To be ready [for] the serve and the return and it’s a pretty big part of the game. We’re ready for this weekend. We’re pretty excited about this weekend.”
This weekend’s opponents are two teams that the Wolfpack competed against last year. The team defeated Florida International 4-3 and Penn State 7-0 last season.
“Florida International, that was our first victory last year over a ranked opponent,” Guerra said. “They were 25th in the nation when we beat them. It was a really, really huge victory for us. We had that special feeling that we know that is the team that made us. Both teams are really tough.”
