The three-way stop at the intersection of Dan Allen and Sullivan drives will experience alterations for the remainder of the week, including a closure of the area over this past weekend.
According to Supervisor for Utilities and Engineering Services Ed Sinnott in an e-mail, the end of Sullivan Drive will narrow to one-lane traffic during the school week but will close completely over the weekend.
Sinnott was unavailable for comment Monday afternoon.
The traffic rerouting is part of an effort to expedite the maintenance of a leaky water main in the area and should be fixed by the beginning of next week, barring any changes, Sinnott stated in his e-mail.
“We haven’t had a problem with rain, but that’s [Utilities and Engineering Services’] estimate with nothing unforeseen occurring,” Christine Klein, information and communication specialist for Transportation, said.
Although Sinnott advised avoiding this intersection over the next week or so, Klein said the alterations shouldn’t affect the Wolfline bus routes.
“It’s just closing down Sullivan Drive,” she said. “It’s not affecting the bus routes. Buses will be given priority.”
Capt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police had no additional information about the closure but said the department would address enforcement issues as needed.
Ryan Unsworth, junior in marine sciences and geology, said he usually relies on his bike when traveling from Wolf Village Apartments to Central Campus.
He said the construction has still affected him adversely.
“It affected me on the way back from work today,” Unsworth said.
The construction blocks the sidewalks and forces bicyclists and pedestrians to take a makeshift ramp, and, according to Unsworth, “it was bumpy.”
Maria Rock, junior in civil engineering, said the work will affect her route to and from classes.
“It only bothers me because I don’t like to drive on Hillsborough [Street],” she said.
Unsworth said he thinks student parking on West Campus will also be affected.
“That would be huge for people going to West Lot,” he said. “People would have to leave early because traffic would be backed up.”
According to Rock, the traffic is inconvenient, but she understands the importance of fixing the problem.
“Certain times of day, traffic on Dan Allen [Drive] is miserable, but if they need to do it … then it’s fine,” she said.
Klein said she maintains two listservs to inform people on campus of altered traffic conditions — packparking@lists.ncsu.edu for students and parking@lists.ncsu.edu for staff and faculty.
