N.C. State won its third consecutive game on Saturday in dramatic fashion as Stephen Hauschka nailed a 42-yard, game-winning field goal in overtime to lift the Wolfpack to the 19-16 win over Miami.
After Hurricanes junior kicker Daren Daly, who had earlier hit a 27-yard attempt with 19 seconds left in regulation, missed a 27-yarder wide left in overtime, the Pack ran three plays and Hauschka stepped onto the field.
After missing his first attempt of the day, Hauschka hit his next four, including the final one which sent him running down the opposite side of the field with his helmet raised above his head.
The rest of the team mobbed Hauschka once it caught him, and a few players put the graduate kicker on their shoulders as they celebrated the victory with the Orange Bowl’s visitor section.
“My focus on the last kick was just to slow down because everything happens out on the field a lot faster than out in practice,” Hauschka said.
“I was just happy to be in the situation. I’ve never had a chance to win a game like that with a kick, so I was really excited to have that opportunity.”
The State defense almost entirely shut down the Miami passing offense, save one 84-yard touchdown to Darnell Jenkins. Quarterback Kirby Freeman threw for more interceptions (three) than completions (one).
In response to its inability to pass on the Pack, Miami ran the ball 60 times on the day. Fifteen of them came on its 18-play, six-minute drive that set up Daly’s tying field goal in regulation.
Freeman threw two passes into the end zone at the end of the drive that could’ve won the game, but he failed to connect on either.
“Offensively, we’ve got to be able to throw the ball. We can line up and pound it, pound it, pound it,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said. “But after a certain time, you can only run the ball so many times.”
