Carmichael Complex has hired students outside those currently working at the complex to staff the new Carmichael Recreation Center, according to Dawn Sanner, director of facilities and operations for Carmichael Complex.
“We offered positions to our folks who work in Carmichael Complex first before we opened positions to the general student body,” she said.
After applications were opened to students working in the complex, all positions in the new recreation center were not filled, according to Sanner.
“[Working in the recreation center] isn’t really a move up, it is a different kind of work,” she said. “It’s a new position in a new building.”
Sanner said she is not disappointed in the number of current student employees willing to work in the Rec Center.
“It takes about eight or nine students to run the old gym in the evening,” she said. “Some [students] are comfortable in the positions they are working, and even if people decided to transfer, we would have those original hours that need to be filled.”
According to Sanner, some students will work in both the old complex and the new center, some will transfer, and others have been hired from the outside to fill positions.
Sanner said she was actually excited to have more than 120 students working in the entire complex.
“I have the best student team on campus no matter where they work, the Carmichael Gym or the Carmichael Recreation Center,” she said. “That is awesome.”
“If [students] were expecting to go and use the new addition, they wouldn’t be able to”, she said.
Viviana Rosado, graduate student in microbial biotechnology, said delaying the opening of Carmichael Recreation Center is not in the best interest of students.
Jennifer Schwartz, a senior in mathematics, said delaying the opening of the Rec Center has caused problems for her.
“I’m in the outdoor leadership minor, and our storage facility was supposed to be moved to the new building,” she said. “[Delaying the opening] made it hard to move stuff for classes.”
Scwhartz said she thinks the addition to Carmichael Complex is necessary.
“It’d be nice because the gym itself is overcrowded,” she said. “Finding a good piece of cardio equipment in the middle of the day is impossible.”
Carmichael Recreation Center is still scheduled to open Dec. 3 with a limited opening on Nov. 27, according to Sanner.
“We’re inviting some groups in to test our system to see how everything works as part of training our students,” she said. “We’re moving in equipment and moving in furniture [to the center].”
