According to Public Information Officer Jim Sughrue of the Raleigh Police Department, the driver,Tyler Mitchell who is a sophomore in science education, was not at fault.
“[The pedestrian] was basically crossing the street against the light and [the car] struck him,” he said.
The police report stated that the driver was driving his 1993 Honda west on Hillsborough Street near the intersection of Horne Street.
“Vehicle one had a green light and was traveling through the intersection of Horne Street. Unit two crossed over Hillsborough Street traveling north,” it stated. “Vehicle 1 attempted to stop but did not have enough time before making contact with Unit 2.”
The report stated that driver tried to stop, but was unable to do so before hitting the pedestrian.
Sughrue said the police department does not anticipate any charges being pressed against the Mitchell.
According to Sughrue, this collision is not a common occurrence.
“I don’t remember a large number of collisions on Hillsborough Street but it’s extremely important whenever people are that they cross at the marked crosswalks with the light,” he said.
The street was blocked off Saturday for a few hours.
