A 22-year-old nonstudent reported being raped at a Hillsborough Street bar Friday, Nov. 16 around 1 a.m., according to Jim Sughrue, public information officer for the Raleigh Police Department.
The victim alleged in a Nov. 20 police report that she was forced into having “sex against her will” at 5 O’Clock Sports Bar, Sughrue said.
According to Sughrue, the report has been filed, and charges have not yet been served.
A manager for 5 O’Clock said he was aware of the case, but would not go on the record about the allegations.
Some, however, question the validity of the case, including senior in political science and history, Dave Foxx.
Foxx said he has frequented the establishment and doesn’t see the potential of a rape happening in the relatively small bar.
Whatever the validity of the charge, Foxx said he is concerned for the female population at the University.
“I don’t fear for myself as a man,” he said. “But I fear for the ladies who might be going out there.”
But Jessie Rosenberg, senior in social work, said she personally feels safe when walking around the University.
“I feel safe on campus,” she said. “But I don’t usually go out alone.”
According to Rosenberg, the University offers several services to ensure students’ safety, including safety escorts, blue lights and security guards for late-night library visits.
Even still, she said “there are never too many precautions you can take.”
Rosenberg said she hopes to see educational opportunities come from this situtaion.
“It’s something that should be brought up,” she said. “It’s a taboo subject. Some might say, ‘It was probably a woman’s fault for wearing something revealing,’ but I think it’s never a woman’s fault.”
Foxx agreed.
“When we can use [situations] to teach about the rape culture we have in our society, that is important,” he said.
And, according to Foxx, the location of a rape is less important than the reasons behind it.
“It’s less about where it happened and more about why it occured,” he said.
