Pat Green is the epitome of a country rock star.
He is a sweet-talkin’ Texan with a thick country accent who gushes about missing his wife and kids and, every few words, “darlin'” or “sweetheart” just rolls off the tip of his tongue. He loves playing his music, whether the audience has five members or 500, and he’s not as worried about labels as he is about how his music sounds.
“A lot of folks call it alternative country,” he said. “You can call it whatever you want, so long as you dig it.”
Green says it’s his wife and daughters who have the biggest influence on his music, including his last album, Cannonball, which he said was influenced by the birth of his daughter.
“Honestly, just having my second kid, my daughter,” Green said about what shaped his last album. “Just going through life in a different way. Just trying to capture that and connect with the people out there that are going through that or about to go through that.”
It’s a mix of this album, which came out in 2006, and some of his old, popular songs that Green said he’ll be playing at Lincoln Theatre on Sunday.
“You got to play the new material … ,” he said. “But we’ll play ‘Wave Upon Wave.’ People generally know it’s going to come down there on the end.”
Green says he expects the concert to go as well as it has in the past at Lincoln Theatre.
“I’m excited about the opening act,” he said. “We’ve played there a bunch of times. It’s warm and intimate. It’s one of those places where you can’t get enough of it. It will be good. We are pretty good at bringing the party to the table.”
But aside from being away from his wife and kids, Green said he is always excited about playing his music — and there’s nothing in the future for him but performing.
“I really don’t know that I know how to do anything else, darling,” he said. “The big man upstairs gave me the shot at doing something great, so I better take advantage of it … I try not to complain too much, because I’ve got a great life.”
Tickets are $23 in advance or $25 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show begins at 8 p.m. with Jedd Hughes. For more information about Green’s concert Sunday, visit www.lincolntheatre.com.
