The volleyball team lost its 12th straight match of the season Thursday night in Reynolds Coliseum, falling to No. 13 Duke 3-1.
For the fourth straight match, the Wolfpack (3-13, 0-6 ACC) was able to win a game, but the Blue Devils, led by the ACC’s assist leader Ali Hausfeld and kills leader Carrie DeMange were too much to handle.
DeMange had 15 kills but was held to her lowest hitting percentage of the season thanks to the Wolfpack’s 14 team blocks. Senior middle blocker Ashley Wallace and junior middle blocker Aiwane Iboaya led the blockade with six and four blocks, respectively.
Wallace said she’s familiar with Duke’s Hausfeld and DeMange.
“[Carrie and Ashley] were on a high school rival team so I’ve known [them] since high school,” Wallace said. “We’ve always been on opposing teams so to block [Carrie] is exciting for me.”
DeMange was held to a .130 hitting percentage on the match, while the Blue Devils (11-3, 6-0) recorded a .224 clip as a team. Coach Charita Stubbs said stopping DeMange was a major part of the game plan.
“She’s a great player, and she does a lot for that team,” Stubbs said. “We know she’s going to score, so our goal was to go out and minimize what she was capable of doing.”
Freshman setter Alex Smith dished out 35 assists and Iboaya contributed 12 kills, while freshman Lauren Zaniboni led the Pack with 15 kills.
Zaniboni said State’s problems were mental.
“We worked in practice this week on mental toughness because we noticed that a lot of our mistakes are mental mistakes,” Zaniboni said.
She also said inexperience may have taken its toll in the Pack’s loss to Duke — the team’s 40th straight ACC defeat.
“I think especially since we’re young we have to put forth every ounce of effort on every play, and teams like Duke can afford to take a play off,” Zaniboni said.
The Pack’s win against Duke was only the second game the Blue Devils have dropped in ACC play this season.
Iboaya said taking a game from the ACC leaders will prove to be a good experience for the young team.
“It was really good, especially since they truly tried hard.” she said, “We earned our win.”
DeMange said she credited the Pack’s lone win to State’s defense.
“They dug some balls that I didn’t think they would get their hands on,” DeMange said. “Their defense is unbelievable right now. It’s just a matter of consistency.”
Asked if she thought State’s ACC losing streak could end this season, DeMange said it was a possibility.
“I think they’ll upset someone. I think it’ll come sometime,” she said, “We were actually just saying that in the locker room. If they play like they played tonight, they’ll beat someone.”
