Kenny Batts saved about 150 lives Tuesday.
By his calculations, anyway.
To the senior in applied math and chemistry and Pre-Health Club vice president, the formula is pretty simple.
Each blood donation saves three lives. And the club’s Brickyard blood drive, which Batts coordinated, received about 48 donors.
144.
“[The blood drive] was successful in the fact that we’re actually here,” he said. “We were only able to get one bloodmobile, but we made our goal, which was 50 donors. Or, we’ll be close — we’ll have 49 donors, hopefully, by 3:30 p.m. [the time at which the blood drive ended.]”
And Batts doesn’t just help organize the club’s blood drives, the second of which the club will hold next semester. He’s also an active blood donor.
“I always thought it was a good thing,” he said. “Everyone should come donate.”
The donated blood gets delivered to and used in local hospitals — a plus, Batts said, since he knows it will go toward saving members of the community.
The blood drive isn’t the only event Batts has chosen to coordinate. He has been a club member since his sophomore year, when he decided he wanted to go into pre-med. And he said last year, as treasurer, he helped organize clothing drives and weekly bingo games in a local nursing home.
Not only is he involved in the Pre-Health Club, he said he is also taking a lighter course load this semester to focus on his own health and nutrition.
“Junior year is really hard,” Batts said of his past year, in which he focused mainly on his classes. “I gained a lot of weight. Now, I’m getting my life balanced.”
And, he said, due to his double major, he will now be enrolled in classes for an additional year as a second-year senior.
“I’m class of ’09 now,” Batts said. “Yay!”
But he didn’t let the summer slip away without earning a few credits. Traveling across the sea, he spent time studying at Oxford.
“It was the best trip ever,” Batts said. “England is my favorite country now.”
The British atmosphere, he said, completely contrasts with the atmosphere that extends from America’s east coast to the west.
“They’re very friendly, very chill and laid back,” he said. “That’s something we totally miss.”
