Sorority hosts benefit fundraiserThe University chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority will host a tug-of-war competition, a barbecue and bake sale fundraiser Sunday at 2 p.m at the Delta Zeta house on West Fraternity Court.
Event organizer Caroline Byrd, a senior in psychology, said this is the second year the event has taken place and that the sorority will donate all proceeds from the competition and barbecue sales to the Painted Turtle Camp.
“The organization is one of Paul Newman’s ‘Hole in the Wall’ camps to benefit chronically ill children and their families,” Byrd said. “It is basically a hospital disguised as a camp.”
Byrd said participating teams should include eight members and there is a $30 registration fee for each team. She said individuals can register at the event, but if they do, they should arrive around 1:30 p.m.
She said barbecue plates cost $10 per person and include a pig pickin’, fried chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, bread, tea and lemonade.
Byrd said the event will also feature a bake sale and those proceeds will benefit Sound Beginnings, an organization that helps children with hearing disabilities.
FYC Students compete for prize The First Year College will host the first ever faculty-student pingpong competition starting today at 2:30 p.m. in the Tucker Community Lounge.
Participations must work for, or be enrolled in, the FYC program and all individuals will be divided into teams representing either Tucker or Owen residence hall, according to Associate Director Karen Hauschild.
“The winning team will receive a brand new pingpong table for their residence hall,” Hauschild said.
She said organizers will also offer pizza and door prizes at the event. There is no pre-registration required for those who want to participate.
According to Hauschild, the idea for the event came from the fact that Da Chen, the author of the summer reading requirement Colors of the Mountain, was a pingpong champion in China.
She said students do not need to bring any equipment or money because everything will be supplied at the event.
“They just need to bring themselves and a lot of enthusiasm,” Hauschild said.
Fraternity kicks off week of eventsThe Xi Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will host the Blue and White Gospel Explosion Sunday in the Talley Student Center Ballroom at 4 p.m.
According to Chaplain Chip Hunt, a senior in agricultural business, the event will feature performance groups from the University, UNC-Chapel Hill and the local community.
“This is the first time a black Greek Letter Organization has hosted a Gospel performance on campus,” Hunt said. “We expect it to be a very impressive program.”
Hunt said tickets can be purchased in advance for $5 by contacting a fraternity member or for $7 on the day of the performance. Contact information can be found at the Xi Zeta website at http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_orgs/frat_sor/phi_beta_sigma/home.php, he said.
According to Hunt, this event will kick off Sigma Week, which will include various educational programs hosted by the fraternity. More information can be found on Facebook or the African American listserv in the multicultural student affairs office, he said.
