What happened? After going on a six-game unbeaten streak, the women’s soccer team has lost its last two games. N.C. State fell to Miami 2-1 and followed that up with a 4-1 loss against Florida State, bringing its record to 5-3-2 (0-2 ACC).
“We need to capitalize better on our opportunities and play with a high intensity the whole time, not just parts of the game,” senior Jessica O’Rourke said.
Coach Laura Kerrigan also said momentum shifted after a good start to the Florida State game.
“The first 25 to 30 minutes against Florida State we played beautifully,” Kerrigan said. “We just have to do that for a consistent 90 minutes, and we’ll be all right.”
Who’s hot?Senior Jessica O’Rourke notched a last-minute goal in the team’s loss against Miami off an assist from Chantalle Dugas. In the team’s next outing, junior Lindsay Vera fired a shot into the top-left corner of the net for the Wolfpack’s lone goal against Florida State.
“Jessica is a huge factor in the middle for us,” Vera said. “We count on her to keep up the momentum of the game.”
Who’s not?The Pack defense allowed 18 shots in its game against Florida State — double the amount the team managed to tally. After allowing on average about seven shots per game in its previous three games, State has allowed 33 total shots in the two recent losses.
“After they scored two, it was just a downer,” Vera said. “I think we came out in the second half on the defense instead of the attack.”
What’s next?State hosts to Tobacco Road-rival Duke (6-2-2, 1-1) at 2 p.m. Sunday.
“Our mentality has picked up a little bit after our two losses,” Vera said. “The Duke game is always a good game.”
