Along with some humor from Brandon Costner and Ben McCauley, basketball fans got a small glimpse of the men’s and women’s basketball teams Friday night at BBallin’ at the Old Barn.
The two teams did some practice drills and threw in some hot shots — a game where shots from different places on the court count for different numbers of points — with a few fans chosen by players to participate, and a 3-point shoot-out in a preseason showcase at Reynolds Coliseum.
The night finished with an autograph session, but the fans didn’t get to see much other than layups and three man weave from the teams when they were on the court.
“The 3-point competition was pretty exciting. The hot shot got kind of boring and went on pretty long,” Edward Peebles-Maxwell, a junior in meteorology and chemistry, said. “But overall it was good to see all the new players.”
Men’s basketball coach Sidney Lowe also made special mention of the freshmen in his address to the crowd, drawing loud applause.
“Along with those players coming back, we have some freshmen that are coming in that we’re expecting great things from,” Lowe said.
Among those players is forward J.J. Hickson, who often opted for slam dunks during layup drills much to the crowd’s liking.
Peebles-Maxwell said his favorite player, though, is Costner, a redshirt sophomore forward.
“He can do it all,” Peebles-Maxwell said. “He’s so versatile.”
Costner was also one of the demonstrative players, at one point celebrating a basket by bumping into McCauley, a junior forward. Both players then fell to the ground and acted like they were injured. Before the three-point shootout Costner donned a red and white fan wig.
Sarah Foroudi, a freshman in First Year College, said Costner and McCauley’s fall was clearly a joke and she wasn’t worried.
“No, I laughed,” she said. “Hopefully he’s all right.”
Redshirt sophomore point guard Farnold Degand said the personality of the team was on display for fans with such instances during Friday’s event.
“That’s how the team is. We’re a lot of outgoing guys, and we have a lot of fun,” Degand said. “Y’all just got a glimpse of it. That’s not even half of what we normally do.”
Women’s basketball coach Kay Yow, who is starting her 33rd season, said she felt right at home with the fans and the men’s team in Reynolds.
“It’s wonderful to be here with all the red and white and the men’s team and just family,” Yow said. “I just feel family when I’m standing here.”
Redshirt freshman Megan Zullo, who was Costner’s partner in the 3-point shoot-out, scored 18 to his 11. She said Costner might be hearing about how she did better.
“I might give him a little bit of a hard time,” Zullo said. “If he’d knocked down a couple more, we would have been good to go.”
Meanwhile, Zullo said despite her team’s youth — 11 of 13 players are either freshmen or sophomores — she’s excited about the upcoming season.
“I don’t see youth as a setback because we bring a lot of energy,” Zullo said.
On the men’s side, Degand is expected to take over as the starting point guard after Engin Atsur’s departure. He said he’s not worried about the pressure, though.
“I’m expecting us to be as good as any backcourt in the country. I’m not afraid of anybody, and I don’t think anybody’s afraid of me,” Degand said. “So I’m going to go out there and play hard and help the team and do what I can.”
And for Jim Trew, a junior in aerospace engineering, the event at Reynolds was one that got him more ready for the season to start.
“It was a lot of fun to watch. It showed off the talents of the players. It got the hype up hearing the coaches talk before the event,” Trew said. “It was really enlightening and just got me really excited for basketball season even more than I was before.”
