The Student Senate announced the results of its first-year freshmen and graduate student elections Wednesday.
The Senate held a mini orientation for the newcomers Wednesday night to introduce them to much of what they would do for the rest of the year.
Student Senate President Greg Doucette said he hopes Student Government will be able to keep the new senators actively involved for the next four years because of SG’s turnover from year to year.
“I hope, first and foremost, that we’ll be able to provide them with leadership opportunities,” he said. “There seems to be a lot of interest in Student Government right now, and we hope we can maintain it.”
Josh Poteat, a freshman in First Year College and new senator, said he decided to run for a Senate seat because he liked SG and was involved in his high school’s SG for three years.
“I can do a good job helping out,” he said.
Deanna Stewart, a graduate student in natural resources and new senator, said she decided to join SG because she wanted to get involved, especially since she attend N.C. State as a undergraduate but was only really involved in clubs.
“I’d really like to work with the Campus Community Committee,” she said.
According to Stewart, she would also like to work with Athletics but she is unsure of as to how.
Nate Myers, a freshman in mechanical engineering and new senator, partook in his first leadership activity with SG as a new member of the Fee Advisory Committee, which Student Body President Bobby Mills appointed him to before Myers decided to run for Senate.
Myers said he met Mills, Student Chief Justice Lock Whiteside, Student Body Treasurer David Foxx and former Senate Pro Tempore James Hankins at different events, and they convinced him to join Student Government.
He began talking to Mills, he said, at the “Back to School Jam” where he told Mills he wanted to get more involved on campus.
“[Mills] was telling me about Student Government and the branches and what they do,” he said.
According to Myers, because he is a Park Scholar, leadership and service are important to him.
“I really wanted to get involved in campus,” he said.
Myers said he just wanted to do something on campus, but it didn’t matter what, and that’s why Mills appointed him to the Fee Advisory Committee.
He said he wants to work with all aspects of the University — Housing, Athletics, Dining, Transportation, student programs and concerts, and he wanted to address any concerns students have in his tenure as a senator.
