Watching the rise of dance-rock into the mainstream has been an interesting thing. Bands like The Bravery, Panic! at the Disco and The Killers all have somehow weaseled their ways onto the airwaves under the cover of cheesy synth lines, tales of broken hearts and way too much makeup. And now, ready to fall in line right behind them, is Metro Station. Compiled of 4 swooping-haired young men with a penchant for catchy choruses and tight jeans, Metro Station sounds basically like a mix of the bands listed above. It’s always disheartening to hear something that’s unoriginal, but Metro Station seems to do it a little better than its peers. With guest production from Motion City Soundtrack on a track and the rest by S*A*M and Sluggo, whose clients include Gym Class Heroes and Cobra Starship, the album has a tight and professional sound to it. Tracks like “Control,” “Wish We Were Older” and “California” all have the potential to rattle around in your head for extended periods of time, prompting uncontrollable humming and tapping of the legs and feet. Others, like “Seventeen Forever” and “Tell Me What to Do” sound like lame remixes of Fall Out Boy songs, if that is at all possible. Corny lyrics aside, (I’m coming down/ bring me up/ take it off/ let’s just touch), the dudes in Metro Station don’t do anything innovative on its self-titled debut, but that doesn’t mean it’s terrible. Fitting the bill for what’s hot in pop music right now, look for these guys to make an appearance on your TV set soon.
