Raleigh Police has blocked off the tailgating area to Edwards Mill Road, south of Trinity Road, according to Public Information Officer Jim Sughrue.
The area was blocked off Friday, and the new rule took effect for the first time before Saturday’s game.
According to Sughrue, there is a dead-end section of Edwards Mill there, where tailgating had spawned up.
Some of the property in that area, he said, belongs to the RBC Center and Carter-Finley Stadium, but Raleigh Police blocked off the portion that was public due to complaints.
“There were concerns about littering and some other quality of life violations in the area,” he said. “We reviewed those concerns and found that it was tailgating taking place [either] in the [way of the] street or private property.”
He said Raleigh Police determined it was appropriate to no longer allow tailgating in that area because of the concerns raised, although Sughure said he was unsure of when the complaints first started.
“I don’t know whether all the complaints were coming from residents there or property owners elsewhere,” he said.
He did say, however, in addition to the complaints about littering, police received complaints about “general things that can be associated with tailgating.”
Sughrue said there are a lot of areas where tailgating is not allowed.
