Andrea Bentley was a sophomore. Charita Stubbs was associate head coach at Arizona. Chrissy Zirpolo and Lauren Zaniboni were playing high school volleyball in California. It was Oct. 21, 2005.
That day was the last time the volleyball team won an ACC match, a 3-1 win at Boston College.
Now Stubbs is the team’s coach, and Zirpolo is a sophomore standout. Zaniboni is a freshman starter, and Bentley is a senior defensive specialist for the team as it visits Boston College for a 7 p.m. contest today.
“Two years ago that was a good memory, and I’m back in Boston again. So let’s do it again. I’m really excited,” Bentley said. “We work really hard on the things that we need to get better at, and it’s our time. We’re going to make it happen.”
But even with the team’s history at BC, most of the players weren’t on the team then. Only Bentley, senior Ashley Wallace and junior Aiwane Iboaya were part of the program at the time.
With that dynamic, Zaniboni said the team hasn’t talked much about the team’s 2005 victory in Chestnut Hill.
“We don’t really talk about the past too much,” Zaniboni said. “We’re trying to look ahead.”
As it looks ahead, the team will try to shake its slow starts from recent matches. The Pack lost 30-16 in its first game against Georgia Tech on Sunday and, despite improving throughout the match, was never fully able to recover.
Zaniboni said better starts to matches are a must for the team.
“We’re working on playing hard the whole time. It usually takes us a little while to warm up. Usually we test the waters in the beginning,” Zaniboni said. “We want to come out [in the first game] like we usually do in the third game.”
Zirpolo said coming out ready to play is about the players having confidence in their ability to win ACC matches.
“We need to expect to win, rather than just hoping we’re going to win,” Zirpolo said. “We should expect it and come out with a lot of intensity.”
Stubbs said her team has been good at making adjustments during matches, but she’s still working with her players to do a better job of attacking blocks rather than hitting around them.
Zaniboni said the players are becoming more sure of themselves despite losses against Clemson and Georgia Tech last weekend.
“We’re very confident. We had a couple losses last weekend,” Zaniboni said. “We still made some really big strides in terms of our confidence.”
Stubbs said the team is playing a Boston College group with plenty of young players, and then a Maryland team similar to State on Saturday.
“We’re playing against teams that are more comparable to us,” Stubbs said.
Zirpolo said a carry-over of energy from the Tech match could boost the team’s chances tonight.
“We have a lot of intensity right now based off of Sunday’s game,” Zirpolo said. “And I feel like if we keep the intensity up when we play and expect to win, then we have a very good possibility of doing that.”
Bentley said the team is in a perfect spot to pull off the win.
“It’s our first ACC game away, and we’re the underdogs. We have nothing to lose, so we’re going to give it everything we have,” Bentley said. “And we’re going to come out on top.”
