For the fourth straight game, men’s soccer coach George Tarantini missed out on his 200th career win, as N.C. State loss 2-1 to No. 21 Boston College Sunday.
Boston College’s Alejandro Bedoya scored at the 88-minute mark to clinch the ACC win. The Wolfpack dropped to 0-2-1 in the ACC. The Eagles struck first in the 23rd minute when Shawn Chin scored off an assist from Paul Gerstenberger to give Boston College a 1-0 lead.
According to Tarantini, the game was “very crazy,” and State didn’t play with its normal intensity in the first half.
“We didn’t raise the tempo at the beginning. We didn’t start out playing hard,” he said. “In the second half, we finally started playing that N.C. State soccer tempo.”
After being down 1-0 for the majority of the game, the Pack surged back when senior midfielder El Hadj Cisse scored off a cross from sophomore midfielder Jorge Mora with less than five minutes remaining.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Christopher Widman said State had another opportunity to score in the last five minutes of play but couldn’t finish.
“We had a chance to score and missed, and they came back and scored off a header. It was a good shot but unlucky that they got it off in the last two minutes,” Widman said.
Tarantini said he was proud of the way his team played and said they must stay positive and focus on getting a win Wednesday. He also said inconsistency is a big concern and the team must start strong and finish strong to achieve their season goal of an ACC Championship.
“We have to be more consistent. We played a very good Boston College team today, one of the best in the ACC,” Tarantini said. “We have five more ACC games, and we have to be more consistent and come into the game more aggressive.”
“Today there was a big difference between the first and second half. We played well, but we have to be aggressive the whole game.”
State will be playing without Cisse Wednesday against High Point, due to a yellow card he received against Boston College. Tarantini said having Cisse out could really cost the team, but they will look for other guys to step up and contribute.
“[Sophomore defender] Daniel Fish could be someone for us to count on. He could come in and give us some consistency Wednesday,” he said. “[Junior midfielder Marianito] Montero did an excellent job today, so we can count on him as well. We are on the right path we just have to finish opportunities and stay aggressive.”
Senior defender Hugh Cronin credited Boston College for playing hard until the very end and said State has to improve on its shots and stay focused for the remainder of the season.
“Next week is going to be tough without Cisse, but we have to get refocused and get a win,” Cronin said.
