Loyal basketball fans made Dunn Avenue their home Friday night, braving cold weather for a chance to attain front-row tickets to the home basketball game against UNC-Chapel Hill this Saturday.
Matt Haggard, chair of the Campus Community Committee for the Student Senate and organizer of Campout, said he was pleased with the turnout rate though it was slightly less than past events.
“We have fewer people this year, as expected,” Haggard said. “We can attribute the lower turnout rate to our team’s record in the ACC.”
Haggard said students who camped out on Friday night are guaranteed priority seating for the game.
“No student’s ticket who camped out tonight spilled up into the 300-level seating,” Haggard said.
He said the event was easy to organize, and he did not experience any major setbacks while putting it together.
“We had a few general logistics problems — getting students verified and getting the names to athletics,” Haggard said. “But overall there were no major problems.”
Senior Class President Adam Whitehouse said combined efforts from co-sponsors Class Council and Student Government maximized achievements.
“We broke down all communication barriers between Student Government and Class Council,” Whitehouse said. “Two groups were better than one.”
Rachel Dwiggins, a senior in anthropology, said she enjoyed events during Campout including the car-bash and the movie.
“The car smashing is great,” Dwiggins said. “No matter how good they [UNC] are I’m going to support my team.”
Lun Jin Jiang, senior in agricultural business management, expressed similar sentiments and said destroying the Carolina blue car was his favorite event.
“It’s helping me build up my hatred for the Carolina game,” Jiang said.
Brandon McIntosh, a junior in agronomy, said the cold weather could do nothing to take away from his spirit.
“My toes are numb right now, but I’m still happy to be out here,” McIntosh said.
Jacob Freeman, a sophomore in electrical engineering, said he enjoyed the food provided at Campout.
“The barbecue was cold by the time I got it back to my tent, but it tasted good,” Freeman said.
Jiwei Zhu, a sophomore in biological sciences, said acquiring optimal seats for the game makes all the hardships of Campout worthwhile.
“Even though it was extremely cold during the night, I think a ticket to the UNC versus State game is definitely worth it,” Zhu said.
