For the second week in a row, the Pack hosted an opponent from the FCS and cruised to victory, beating Gardner-Webb by a final score of 45-14 Saturday night. Once again, the offense came out of the gates strong, scoring on each of its first four possessions en route to another blowout victory, this one by a final margin of 31 points.
The highlight of the night came late in the third quarter, when Wilson’s 13 yard pass to freshman running back James Washington broke the record set by Andre Woodson of Kentucky in 2006-2007 for consecutive pass attempts without an interception. The completion was one of 26 for Wilson, who also threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters for the best statistical outing of his career.
Wilson spread the wealth, completing passes to 11 different receivers, but zeroed in on redshirt sophomore tight end George Bryan, who, with six catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, made sure his quarterback was not the only one enjoying the best statistical night of his career.
On the other side of the ball, the Pack defense held the opposition to 14 points on 213 yards of total offense. The defense also pitched its second consecutive first half shutout, holding the Runnin’ Bulldogs scoreless until an 18 yard touchdown run by Marquis Sanders put Gardner-Webb on the scoreboard with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter.
A late fumble by redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Glennon led to a Gardner-Webb touchdown and accounted for the final score of 45-14.
